Until now my “quality” photographs have been taken Until now my “quality” photographs have been taken in my studio setup with my Canon 5D mk iv DSLR camera and studio flash. This involves quite a bit of work, especially transferring the photos to my Mac for editing. Today I changed to a static light and my phone. While I wouldn’t want to print them as a poster, they are absolutely fine for online use. The technology behind phone cameras is really amazing!

Going back to an old black clay that I had in the Going back to an old black clay that I had in the studio (which is red until fired). I haven’t used it for a long time but I’ve finished the other black clay I was using. This one is quite rough on the hands but nice to throw with. It’ll be interesting to compared the fired pieces side by side.

Black Moss is an area of moorland above Marsden, a Black Moss is an area of moorland above Marsden, and somewhere I have the good fortune to be able to walk to. This rugged landscape inspired my Black Moss glaze and range of textured pieces. It is on the Pennine Way and affords views right across to Manchester in the West and towards Selby in the East (though often it’s shrouded in mist, cloud or rain!) Normally there are hues of green and brown but a large area was consumed by a moorland fire a couple of weeks ago - so devastating at this time of year due to the ground-nesting birds. The colours are not quite the same at the moment but there were some green shoots of recovery at the margins. Here’s hoping nature will take its course and bring the moor back to life soon. 🤞
When bellying out a vase with texture I can’t supp When bellying out a vase with texture I can’t support the outside as I push from the inside as this would spoil the texture. That means sometimes I can push a bit too far than the clay will allow and a collapse results.
It’s all part of the process and the challenge of making these relatively difficult pieces, but the reward is there when it goes well. In the meantime I have a nice bowl.
