Kevin Threlfall is a Marsden based artist who produces stunning abstracted landscapes, inspired by the ever-changing moods of the Pennine landscape that surrounds us. Kevin’s work can be seen at www.threlfallart.co.uk

During the early stages of the Coronavirus lockdown, Kevin approached me with regard to a collaborative project.

The project was to produce a body of ceramic work that complemented Kevin’s style of painting.

While an exciting prospect, this would be a challenge as ceramic glaze colours depend on chemistry and firing conditions. Layering glazes can produce wonderful, interesting patterns and colours but you can’t simply mix colours like paint. And no two firings are the same!

Glaze tests

The first stage was to undertake a series of glaze tests with various combinations of glazes to try and achieve a look that would be in keeping with Kevin’s painting style.

In total I evaluated over 50 different glaze combinations! Using some of Kevin’s paintings as a reference, I selected a few combinations that I felt would make a complementary series.

The project has really pushed me to experiment with glaze combinations and I’m really happy to share the results of my work.

Thanks to Arts Council England for supporting this project.

These pieces were exhibited Marsden Art Studio and in Enjoy Art Gallery in Marsden
